Media communications encompass a staggering diversity of industries, technology, economic drives, politics, and ideological beliefs. With the advent of the internet and social technology, even the definition of media is changing at astonishing speed.
Just a few decades ago, media consisted principally of one-to-many print and broadcast channels. Today, the rapid evolution of blogs, social media, self-publishing and digital distribution blurs the line between mass communication and individual expression.
The shifting emphasis of profitability over journalistic responsibility and the obfuscation of news, opinion, and entertainment have made it more challenging for us to differentiate fact from fiction, and to find meaning amidst a rising noise floor.
At the same time, advances in media communications and technology offer profound opportunities to connect the world and enable coordination and collaboration that are vital for bringing about a more harmonious and sustainable global civilization.
Transforming a major sector of human society is a complex undertaking. These sectors, or spheres, are complex systems that involve nuanced relationships between many parts and also with the environment. These relationships give rise to collective outcomes and behaviors that are difficult to see as a whole. In addition, people who participate in and are affected by these systems come from different backgrounds with different belief systems, and therefore tend to draw different conclusions about the best way to solve them.
Within this dynamic, various strategies are put forth that address various aspects, and reflect different ideas and perspectives. Even strategies that have historically failed are often championed again because different people have different interpretations of history, and therefore draw different conclusions about what works and what doesn’t.
With this in mind, our goal on this site is simply to illuminate, in general terms, various strategies within the collective mind that aim to close the gap between today’s reality and the future potential of this sphere of human activity. The strategies are not meant to be comprehensive solutions, but general approaches or paths forward.
Members are then invited to rank the strategies by registering an up or down vote to indicate your view on the relative importance or priority of each strategy. Over time, this information will assist research teams in developing new reports for publication.
